About us

About us

Fund for Active Citizenship fAKT is a local non-governmental and non-profit grantmaking foundation that supports citizens of Montenegro in taking active participation in political, economic, civic and cultural life of their communities and society. This approach is based in our belief that all of us, as citizens, have the right and responsibility to contribute to building prosperous society, starting from taking part in solving problems and issues we face in our daily lives in our communities.

By providing financial assistance to civil society organizations through our grant programs, and learning opportunities through our development programs, we want to contribute to positive social change and building of democracy in Montenegro.

FAKT Mission

By providing financial assistance to civil society organizations through our grant programs, and learning opportunities through our development programs, we want to contribute to positive social change and building of democracy in Montenegro.

Democracy is…

For us, democracy is about people being involved in decision making; it can happen in an office, in a school, our neighborhood, community, or in a government; it builds commitment, and its practicing prepares people to be better able to participate as citizens of their nation. For us, active citizen is a value: being a citizen is not just limited to belonging to a country – as a citizen one has rights, but also responsibilities. This value reminds us that in a democracy, the citizens are the solution to our problems. (Savage, 2002)

History of FAKT

Fund for Active Citizenship was officially registered as a local foundation at the beginning of 2008; yet fAKT is not a ‘beginner’ – we grew out of Montenegro office of the Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF, http://www.bcif.org). The registration itself presented one of the final steps in the process of indigenizing BCIF office in Montenegro . Driving forces behind establishing independent foundation come from BCIF long-term strategic commitment to building democracy in Montenegro and determination to be as responsive to local needs and context as possible. The two foundations will work closely in future, building partnership and constructive relationship; in accordance with its strategic priorities, BCIF will continue to provide support to the work of fAKT, both as a donor and a partner.

Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF) began working in Serbia and Montenegro in 1999 as a UK charity, and in the beginning of 2004 was registered as an indigenous fund, with an aim to help build vibrant, stable and sustainable communities in Serbia and in Montenegro. Since its establishment, BCIF has developed significant grantgiving experience throughout Serbia and Montenegro. To date, BCIF has awarded over 360 grants throughout Serbia and Montenegro, amounting to over one million USD, funding initiatives that cover wide range of issues.
